"I'm home!" you called out as you pushed open your front door. Hands full of grocery bags, you close the door with your foot. Not a minute after announcing your presence in the house, a blur ran out from your room and over to your legs. Standing there, nuzzling your shin was your tabby cat, Romano.
Romano had become extremely protective of you once you had found out that you were pregnant. Your fiancé, whose child you were pregnant with, was currently overseas on military business, so you were left alone with Romano. You had just gotten your cat around the time your fiancé and you had started dating. He had always been rather protective of you, but as of late, he would refuse to leave your side. He would throw fits when you would have guests over, not that he wasn't always getting mad when you had others over, especially males.
But lately, he would hiss and sometimes even bite if you had company. Speaking of company, your friend Alfred was going to come over today.
You attempted to walk towards the kitchen, only to stumble over your furry friend with each step. You snapped at him to get out of your way, and he did, but not without some hesitation. Romano was still considerably close to you still, but now you could at least walk. He followed you close behind as you made your way into the kitchen.
Placing your bags on the counter, you looked down at your cat. He was sitting near the entrance of the kitchen and watching you intently. He was treating you like a porcelain doll, like you would break if he wasn't there to protect you. 'Funny,' you thought, 'It's almost like I have a guard cat.'
You lowered yourself to your knees. You didn't have to worry about bending over and leaning down as being hard yet, as your stomach had only a small bulge at the moment. You sat on your knees and outstretched your hand towards your cat.
Obediently, he walked towards your hand and nuzzled it. You petted his head, being mindful of the curl. You had tried to cut it in the past, but Romano refused to let you. You had always wondered why it curled upwards like that and one day you had pulled. You groaned mentally at the memory. You certainly did not want a repeat of that.
"Romano," you addressed him and he looked up at your face, "I'm going to have someone over today-" He growled at what you said and you shot him glare, which silenced him and allowed you to finish your statement, "and I want you to try to be nice to Alfred. He's been my friend for a long time and you know he won't hurt me, so please try to be nice to him."
He groaned with unease at the mention of your friend. You had known Alfred since you were a toddler and you two had clicked ever since you both had accidentally glued your fingers together in preschool. He was your best friend and he was rather protective of you like how Romano was. However, their relationship was much different than yours.
When you had first gotten Romano, you had invited Alfred over to see your kitten. When Alfred had tried to pet him, Romano had bitten his hand. From that moment onward, there seemed to be an ongoing battle between the two. For example, when Alfred had broken his favorite toy, Romano had shred Alfred's favorite shirt.
You were aware of their mutual distaste for one another, but you didn't think much of it. You smiled down at Romano in a reassuring way before returning to your groceries. Once you had everything put away, you got out some leftovers of last night's risotto and placed a little in Romano's bowl for a snack. Just as you put the container away, the doorbell rang.
Immediately, Romano stopped eating and started hissing and growling like crazy. You shushed him and started to make your way to the door. Romano repeatedly attempted to get in your way and tried to block you from the door. Unlucky for him, as a human, your arms were longer than his, so when the doorknob was within reach, you grabbed it and yanked the door open.
You were greeted of the sight of your best friend smiling at you. "(NAME)!" He yelled as he grabbed you into a tight bear hug. "Hey, Alfred!" You greeted him as he put you down. "How've you been?"
"The hero's been great!" As you led Alfred into the house, he told you all about how he helped an old lady cross the road and other things that happened to him on the way to your house.
Romano seated himself in the doorway of the living room, glaring at Alfred with distaste every time he put an arm around you or touched you.
"Oh! Hey! If it isn't the monster cat!" Alfred said, noticing Romano. You frowned a little at the nickname Alfred had given your cat. "He's really not that bad, Alfred. He just doesn't like you." You stated simply.
Alfred sat down near Romano on the ground and began to "play" with him. Of course, this was more like Alfred would repeatedly tap and poke Romano and Romano would try to bite or scratch him back.
You just shook your head at them. "Would you like anything to drink?" You asked. "Yeah, a coke would be nice. Thanks, (nickname)." Alfred answered, now attempting to grab at Romano's tail.
You went into the kitchen and poured some coke into a glass. "Hey, (Name)? What happens if I pull on the monster's curl?"
"NO! ALFRED DO-"
But before you could get back in the living room in time to stop Alfred, you heard a loud yowl from Romano and yelp from Alfred. You raced into the living room and took a look at the scene in front of you.
Romano was backed up into a wall and his fur was ruffled up and he was hissing at Alfred. Alfred was a couple feet away and was holding his hand to his chest. You could see a little blood dripping from his injury onto the floor, so you ran to the bathroom and grabbed the first aid kit.
Opening it up, you grabbed some disinfectant and a rag. Gingerly, you took Alfred's hurt hand into your own to see the damage that's been done. You flinched a little at the sight.
Alfred had three long gashes against the back of his hand and they were bleeding heavily. "When I grabbed his curl, he all of the sudden scratched me with his claws. The hero didn't see that coming."
You sighed and told him this was going to hurt. You gently cleaned his wounds and wrapped some bandages around his hand.
Closing up the kit, you then looked over at Romano. He had calmed down a little and his fur wasn't on end as it was earlier. He was glaring daggers at Alfred, though. He glanced over at you and you shot him a dirty look. He withdrew a little at your glare. You were going to give it to him later for hurting Alfred so badly.
You went to put up the kit and grabbed some towels to clean up the blood on the floor. You came back into the living room to see a glaring show go down. They paused, only to look up at you. When they did, however, you shot them glowers back.
You began to clean the floor when a hand took the rag from you. "I'll clean it up. I'm the one who caused the mess, anyway." Alfred shot you an apologetic look. "Nah, it's my fault. I should have told you earlier not to pull his curl."
You felt something rub against your side and looked down to see Romano. He held a remorseful look on his face. You told him to apologize to Alfred and he bowed his head to show that he was sorry.
You sighed. "What am I going to do with you two?" "You could throw us out to the dogs." Alfred answered. Instantly, Romano's fur was on end and he hissed at the idea. You and Alfred both laughed at his reaction to Alfred's comment.
You waved goodbye to Alfred as he walked away from your house. Romano sat near the window inside, also watching. The two had been on better terms today after you gave them both a scolding. Of course, Alfred still called Romano "Monster Cat" and Romano would still hiss at him, but at least they were on better terms now.
You closed the door behind you once you reentered the house. Romano hopped down from his seat and walked towards you. You picked him up into your arms and glanced at the clock.
It was pretty late and you were tired from mediating between Romano and Alfred all day. You Made your way into your bedroom and placed your cat on the bed.
You changed into pajamas and laid down next to Romano. He snuggled up against your chest and you stroked his fur. He purred and you smiled at him. Slowly, you began to feel sleep overtake you.
Just before you drifted off, you felt Romano nuzzle your neck.
As you fell asleep, Romano lay awake for a while, making sure that the house was safe and that, more importantly, you were safe. He glanced up at your face to see that you were fast asleep. Romano looked down at your stomach. He could feel the heat radiating from it. If the child was anything like you, then he would also have to protect the child from danger. He would gladly do it though, since he cared so deeply about you. He smiled and laid his head next to yours, before drifting off into a slumber himself.
